Where are Washington,DC's social entrepreneurs?
Washington, DC is full of social entrepreneurs. But where are they and how can I find them? What inspiring, game changing, and innovative projects are they working on? Washington, DC needs an internet-based open source platform that can help identify social entrepreneurs so that they can collaborate to help DC government, local non-profits, for-profits, universities, hospitals, community organizers, teachers, parents, students, filmmakers, musicians, artists, and innovators of all ages. How difficult is it to find a group or individual in this city interested in exactly the same project you are working on? An internet platform like this can help individuals… more

We need city-wide wireless internet!
I would be great if the entire city had wireless internet access.

Report Park Problems Quickly and Easily with ParkScan!
KaBOOM!, a national nonprofit in NW DC that promotes play and community built playgrounds (kaboom.org), has highlighted the work of ParkScan in San Francisco (www.parkscan.org), and thinks it would be a good fit for the District. ParkScan is a community-initiated, web-based reporting system that enables park users to report maintenance issues they observe in city parks and playgrounds to the appropriate city agencies that manage them. Observations are assigned a tracking number, which creates an accountable and transparent system for park users and city officials. ParkScan data is also used by the Recreation and Park Department to make… more

GPS for bus system arrivals
Reduced wait times. Greater reliability. As a result, ridership might increase, leading to more revenue for the system. GPS can even create a means for monitoring driver adherence to schedules--putting an end to the maddening clustering of buses. GPS was tried several years ago in DC with NEXTBUS, which was mysteriously pulled due to technical difficulties, apparently never to return.

Online temporary parking passes
We have a 2 hour limit to parking in the neighborhood. That's fine! Without that restriction, out-of-towners leave their cars here. But vendors who work for us always get tickets. This is a shame. They are hard-working people. We should have an online temporary parking pass system to give them DAILY permits, even if it costs us a buck or two. We could buy them at night, then leave them for our workers in the morning. Thank you!

create an interactive public database of vacant properties
The city should create an interactive, public database for vacant and abandoned properties.
It should allow any citizen to report an abandoned or vacant property to city officials. After the city investigates the property, the results of the investigation are posted. This information is linked to the city's GIS databases as well as the tax accessors database to show the property owner, recent tax payments, as well as the tax class (i.e., whether it is taxed for the appropriate use).
This tool would empower citizens to address problem properties, harness citizen reporting for code enforcement, and encourage sale and redevelopment… more

Cell phone service in Metro for ALL providers
It's a security issue that ALL cell phone service providers be accessible in the Metro system. Obviously in case of a disaster or evacuation, time is critical, and communication could save lives. But even on a daily basis to send calls about being late for dinner, or being notified of train delays would be nice. As it stands, only SOME privileged few have these benefits.

Dispute property tax assessments/tickets online
Disputing a property tax assessment or parking ticket is a slow process requiring evidence to be mailed and/or presented in person. Why not create an online process that could deal with many of these claims more quickly, saving the District and citizens postage and time.

make most city services accessible via the web.
Now one has to call 311 for most city services such as making bulk trash pick-up arrangements or finding out about the need for permits for certain activities. It would be great if service requests could be entered via the web and question answered via email.

Link Stolen Auto's to Parking Enforcement Database.
The most efficient agency is parking enforcement, the sensors and information gathered during parking enforcement should be linked to the MPD stolen auto database so more vehicles can be recovered.

We still need a separate non-emergency police #
Combining non-emergency contact with the policy with other info really doesn't work that well if your focus is a response from the police, e.g., when a car is parked blocking yoru driveway.

reporting taxi drivers online
I have had many offensive taxi drivers and filing a complaint never seems to do anything. An online or textable system for reporting offensive or dangerous cab drivers would make it easier to report them.
This would also be helpful for careless or distracted bus drivers.

Ticket drivers using handheld cell phones or texting while driving. I see out-of-DC tags doing this daily. Camera systems that can enforce this??

Give away used computers to low-income kids
Just like the local nonprofit www.FirstTimeComputers.org does, refurbish computers that would otherwise end up in landfills and give them to low-income DC kids for free.

Invest in a SmartTrip card type solution for Parking fees
Allow citizens to text the meter number and hours desired which is automatically charged to thier SmartTrip Card account. This could also be accomplished via Twitter. Other systems are in use in surrounding counties but I believe the tie in to SmartTrip and use of currently available messaging sytems could increase adoption and ensure success.

allow proposals for events or art in triangle parks
A lot of triangular mini-parks lie unused. Understandably, hands-on management of requests for activities in hundreds of little parks would be unwieldy. However, a simple online request and scheduling system could allow for greater community use of the triangles.

School Partnership Locator Mash-up
Mashup data from communityyouthmapping.org, school data, and google maps so that schools can plug in their data (#kids eligable for reduced price lunch, #kids without medical care, etc.) so schools can easily find organizations in their area that they could partner with to meet students' social needs. Furthermore, using google maps would help them see what other schools that may have similar needs are nearby, so they can coordinate service partnerships with other schools.
